Rotten in Denmark

Trailer for Rotten In Denmark, a film by Nicodemus shot in New York night clubs Tunnel and Limelight.

(We can’t find this video - please link us if you have it!)

In his words:

Nicodemus is a mighty shaft of luminescent light…er hang on, he told me to be respectful but I’m getting carried away. He is an egocentric wanker with an inflated sense of his own self importance. Now we’re getting there. Thinks he’s an actor *smirk* - well to be fair he did hone his chops with the mighty and the mad, Steven Berkoff (London Theatre Group), Jerzy Grotowski (Poland Teatr Laboratorium) and Moni Yakim (American Mime Theatre) before founding his own Abba Dabba performance ensemble in Sydney.

He toured Europe with multi-media performance installations and when he wasn’t hitting on fab Berlin babes at Dschungel nightclub actually did some shows. In New York he continued smashing things in art gallery’s and did a little stage acting, *does sweeping the theatre count?* and met Anitra, a ballet dancer/opera singer who he can’t seem to get rid of. He put up exit signs all round the house and came to find out she can’t read.

Together they collaborated on numerous projects including a fifties rockabilly robot act called American Beauties, a minimal industrial music project called The Elephant of Celebes and the ongoing Men Smash Atoms, laying operatic vocals over electro-grooves spiked with his self penned spoken word. The Deconstruction Of Hamlet was their sexy stage version of the Bards mighty play.

And contrary to popular myth, Nicodemus was never banned in Japan *although he’d like to be*.

In HIS words: from the blitz kids site

Nicodemus honed his performing skills with the mighty and the mad including legendary playright and actor Steven Berkoff (London Theatre Group) Jerzy Growtowski (Polish Laboratory Theatre) Moni Yakim (American Mime Theater) and Raphael Kelly (New York Shakespeare School) and founded the cutting edge Sydney theatre ensemble 'Abba Dabba', a cross-disciplinary team of performance artists, filmmakers and musicians staging original group penned plays in the surreal vein of Beckett and Artaud in an abandoned Church they renovated into an arts workshop and performing space.

Nicodemus made several widely seen short films including the nightmarish 'Terrible Tears', while experimenting with electronic music, painting and photography. He later combined these diverse elements into dynamic solo multi-media  installations, performing throughout Europe and especially Berlin, his spiritual home, where he collaborated with other filmmakers and artists including on Claudia Skoda's epic 'Big Birds' at the Congresshalle.

While performing in several projects in New York (among them Gena Wendkos' acclaimed 'Blue Blood') a fortuitous meeting with talented singer and dancer  Anitra resulted in their creation of 'The Elephant Of Celebes', (after Max Ernst's ground breaking painting, so brilliantly described in Robert Hughes book 'The Shock Of The New') wrapping an electronic soundscape around her opera vocals and his spoken word spiked with powerful visual stimuli, incorporating slides, films and original costume designs.   During a  European and Australian tour,  a line from a Yevteshenko poem and an evolution in their sound, inspired the name change to 'Men Smash Atoms'.

Nicodemus produced (and he and Anitra co-hosted) the cult weekly New York cable TV show 'Krash Boom TV', an alliance of state of the art technology and underground pop culture, exploring the world of futurists, artists, musicians, cyberpunks and computer hackers, or as Saint Jude put it 'The place where science and art overlaps'. More recently he wrote, directed and played the lead in the feature length psuedo-Elizabethan film noir 'Rotten In Denmark', a potent deconstruction of Shakespeare's Hamlet, now in post production.

'Men Smash Atoms' are currently recording songs for an upcoming CD at their own Decoder Digital Annex, to be followed by an extensive U.S. and European tour.

A lifelong interest in psycho-spiritual techniques  that unlock the gates of conciousness has made Nicodemus a passionate metaphysician, a devotee of Mahayana Buddhism, the Qabalah, through the teachings of the Hermetic Order of The Golden Dawn and the Thelemic Ancient Ordo Templi Orientis

IT STARTED AT THE YELLOW HOUSE

About a million years ago there was the Yellow House on Macleay Street in Sydney, started by surrealist artist Martin Sharp. Full of pop-art, the canvas was the house itself, walls, floors and ceilings were covered in paintings, scuplture, and masks.

You’d often run into brilliant make-up artist Richard Sharah who hung out with painter Bruce Gould. Bruce was a fabulously eccentric guy who was doing shows with Sylvia and the Synthetics, underground drag performers who threw fish and other goodies onto the audience. Pre Rocky Horror 'little Nell' Campbell would do an occasional show. Talented occult painter Rosoleen Norton, the witch of Kings Cross might wander in.

This was a time when mime artist Lindsay Kemp lived in Sydney, he transformed the Glebe Theatre into his own magical performance space. Polish Laboratory Theatre’s Jerzy Growtowski brought over his play Apocalypsis Cum Figuris and started a school in Armidale. Actor/playright Steven Berkoff was a regular visitor, acting in and directing his plays. All of these amazing people held extensive workshops, which I loved, especially Berkoff’s.

With a little support from the arts council I founded the Sydney theatre ensemble Abba Dabba, performing original group penned plays in an abandoned church we renovated into an arts workshop and performing space. We’d usually start a performance at midnight, sometimes cops would show up…..and stay, applauding along with everyone else.

Having met so many talented Brits I couldn’t wait to get to London, I’d been corresponding with the E15 acting school. Hated England when I got there and split for Berlin. It was love at first sight.

I was experimenting with electronic music, painting and film so I combined these diverse elements into solo multi-media  installations. Other artists invited me to collaborate on their projects….. and life was beautiful.

Then the wall came down.

Hullo New York.

I thought the best way to gate-crash NYC was to get my ugly mug on television so I created Krash Boom TV, featuring performance artists, electronic bands and the club kid scene…..and of course shamelessly promoting my music and videos.

I met my muse Anitra who became the KBTV co-host and we started performing as The Elephant Of Celebes, changing it later to Men Smash Atoms which is more apropriate for the kind of noise we make.

I loved the historic Tunnel club and decided it was the perfect setting for my  feature length version of Hamlet, 'Rotten in Denmark - a psuedo Elizabethan film noir’. To get around renting the space (they wanted two grand a day) we showed up in our fab Elizabethan clobber when the club opened at night, pretending we were doing a KBTV shoot. Talk about guerilla filmmaking…..it was a lot of fun.

Neoclassical Nudes and Dandies is my solo ambient project. See a link to this and other delicious propaganda at www.nicodemusweb.com
